London’s Musical Alumni

As the London Olympics end and people around the world try to find other things to fill the extra six hours a day they have open in their schedules, we’ve created a playlist of London musicians, expatriates, and residents who’ve created music in The Big Smoke.  It should be noted that these songs have absolutely nothing to do with the Olympics whatsoever.

 

Our Day Will Come- Amy Winehouse

Relation to City- Born in London

Genre- R&B

Active Years- 1993-2011

While Back to Black was Amy’s most popular album, it was not her first.  Frank was released prior to it.  Amy also founded a rap group called Sweet ‘n’ Sour.

 

Are You Experienced?- Jimi Hendrix

Relation to City- Died in London

Genre- Acid Rock/Blues

Active Years- 1963-1970

Though Hendrix did not have a driver’s license, he owned multiple corvettes and was in frequent car accidents. There may just be a link between these two circumstances…

 

 Son Of A Preacher Man- Dusty Springfield

Relation to City- Born in London

Genre- Soul

Active Years- 1958-1995

Dusty was born as Mary Isobel Catherine Benadette O’Brien.  No wonder she used a different stage name.

 

Eleanor Rigby- The Beatles

Relation to City- Moved to London in 1963

Genre- Rock

Active Years- 1960-1970

After their break-up in 1970, every Beatle released a solo album in the same year.  Yes, even Ringo.

 

 Pumpkin Soup- Kate Nash

Relation to City- Born in London

Genre- Indie Pop

Active Years- 2005 to present

The British Library used Kate Nash’s music in an exhibit that showed the evolution of the Cockney English accent.

 

Lola- The Kinks

Relation to City- Formed in England

Genre-Rock

Active Years-1964-1996

The Kinks were not allowed to play in the United States for most of the 1960’s because they would not used union-approved stagehands and lighting technicians.

 

 Everybody’s At It- Lily Allen

Relation to City- Born in London

Genre- Pop

Active Years- 2002- present

 Lily Allen has a fashion rental shop she started with her sister called Lucy in Disguise.

 

 There Is A Light That Never Goes Out- The Smiths

Relation to City- Self-titled album partially record in London

Genre- Indie Pop

Active Years- 1982-1987

Earlier this year while speaking to NME, former guitarist of The Smiths, Johnny Marr, promised they would reunite if the English government steps down.  Fingers crossed!

 

 Politik- Coldplay

Relation to City- Formed in London

Genre- Rock

Active Years- 1996-present

Coldplay’s most recent album title, Mylo Xyloto, was admitted to having no meaning by lead singer Chris Martin.  By creating new words, Martin and the rest of Coldplay aimed to create a new start for themselves.

 

 My Boy Builds Coffins- Florence + The Machine

Relation to City- Founded in London

Genre- Indie Rock

Active Years- 2007-present

 Florence calls her song Shake It Out her “personal hangover cure”.

 

VCR- The xx

Relation to City- Founded in London

Genre- Indie Pop

Active Years- 2008 to present

The xx is releasing their second studio album called Coexist on September 11th this year.
