As a life-long resident of Des Moines and a new Drake student, when I heard that Mars Café was closing, I died a little on the inside. Maybe it was partially due to caffeine withdrawal, but I couldn’t help but feel like my years at Drake would be slightly less cool than I expected. As much as I adore Starbucks, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, beats local coffee shops.
But today, Mars Café, under the new management of Amedeo Rossi, announced via Facebook that Mars is reopening on September 15th. If the name Amedeo Rossi seems familiar, it’s because Rossi co-owns music venue Vaudeville Mews and is the man who brings tons of tremendous acts to Des Moines through the 80/35 Music Festival.
Under the direction of Rossi and the other newly minted owners of Mars Café, it can be assumed that good music, great coffee, and a killer atmosphere is returning to Dogtown once again.
